Cleaning Instructions (Suggestions Only)
Cleaning Agents
Detergent Solution: Mix one of clear dishwashing liquid or detergent powder (containing no bleaches or strong alkalies) with a cup of warm (not hot) water. This solution must be well-rinsed with clear water.
Vinegar Solution: Mix 1/3 cup of white vinegar with 2/3 cup water.
Detergent / Vinegar Solution: Add one-tablespoon household ammonia (3% solution) with 1/2 cup of water. This solution must be neutralized with vinegar solution.
Ammonia Solution: Mix one-tablespoon household ammonia (3% solution) with 1/2 cup of water. This solution must be neutralized with vinegar solution.
Solvent Dry-Cleaning Solvent: A dry-cleaning solvent (available at your local hardware store).
Instructions For Stain & Substance Removal
Alcoholic Beverage: Blot up surplus. Use a detergent/vinegar solution. Work from the outer edge of the stain, using a little at a time, blotting with dry cloths when necessary.
Blood: Scrape up the excess with a blunt knife. Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blotting dry. Follow with ammonia solution and blot dry.
Candle Wax: Cover with absorbent paper and use hot iron.
Chewing Gum: Chill with an aerosol freezing agent or ice cubes in a plastic bag. Scrape up with a blunt knife. Use a dry-cleaning solvent followed by a detergent/vinegar solution and blot dry.
Chocolate: Scrape up the excess with a blunt knife. Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blot dry. Follow up with an ammonia solution and blot dry.
Coffee: Blot up the excess. Use a detergent/vinegar solution, working from the outer edge, using a little at a time and blotting dry frequently.
Cream: Blot up the excess, then use a detergent or carpet shampoo solution, followed by a solvent then blot dry.
Fats: Scrape up with a blunt knife. Use a dry-cleaning solvent followed by a detergent/vinegar solution and blot dry.
Fruit: Scrape up the excess with a blunt knife. Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blotting dry. Follow with an ammonia solution and blot dry.
Fruit Juice: Soak with cold water and follow with a detergent or carpet shampoo solution and blot dry.
Glue: Scrape up the excess with a blunt knife. Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blotting dry. Follow with an ammonia solution and blot dry.
Grass: Scrape up the excess with a blunt knife. Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blotting dry. Follow with an ammonia solution and blot dry.
Grease Oil: Scrape up any excess with a blunt knife. Use dry cleaning solvent followed by detergent/vinegar solution and blot dry.
Ink (Fountain Pen): Pour cold water over stain and follow with detergents or carpet shampoo solution.
Ink (Ball Point): Use solvent, followed by alcohol or methylated spirits mineral turpentine.
Ink (Felt Tip): Soak with warm water, following with a detergent solution or carpet shampoo solution. Apply clear nail polish remover (preferably acetone).
Tomato Sauce: Soak with warm water, following with a detergent solution or carpet shampoo solution.
Lipstick: Scrape up the excess with a blunt knife. Use a dry cleaning solvent followed by a detergent/vinegar solution then blot dry.
Liquid Foods: Blot up the excess spillage. Use a detergent/vinegar solution. Work from the outer edge of the stain, using a little at a time and blotting up with dry cloths frequently.
Milk: Blot up the excess spillage. Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blotting dry. Follow with ammonia solution and blot dry.
Mustard: Use a detergent solution or carpet shampoo solution and blot dry.
Nail Polish: Scrape up with a blunt knife. Use a dry cleaning solvent followed by a detergent/vinegar solution. Blot dry.
Paint (Water Based): Soak with cold water, following with a detergent or carpet shampoo solution, finishing with a solvent. Blot dry.
Paint (Oil Based): Use alcohol or methylated spirits followed by solvent and then detergent or carpet shampoo solution. Blot dry.
Salad Dressing: Soak with detergent or carpet shampoo solution, following with a solvent. Blot dry.
Shoe Polish: Scrape up with a blunt knife. Use a dry-cleaning solvent, followed by a detergent/vinegar solution. Blot dry.
Soft Drinks: Blot up the excess spillage. Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blotting dry. Follow with ammonia solution and blot dry.
